Tracks of the Week: 2nd September 2022

Our writers have been on a mission to find the best new tracks from across the region, covering the most exciting artists from a wide variety of sounds - from indie to punk and R&B.

Dr Veers - ‘Everything Slowly’

Dr Veers are a Glasgow based alternative rock band and have been together since 2018. ‘Everything Slowly’ is the second single from their upcoming album, following the release of debut single, ‘Microsleep’, last month. ‘Everything Slowly’ draws on the band’s usual 90s influences but also crosses genres like funk and hip hop. Inspired by a clip from The Simpsons as well as personal experience, the song describes waking up and remembering nothing from the night before while the chorus emphasises the feeling of vulnerability as someone recounts the previous night’s events.

Russell Thomas - ‘No Matter The Crime’

‘No Matter The Crime’ is the latest single from Sheffield-based singer Russell Thomas. The folk rock track explores the theme of forgiveness, specifically around letting go of a loved one that has taken their own life. The lyrical weight is offset with a levity and sense of hope conveyed in the instrumentation.

JOYFUL - ‘Falling Asleep’

Daniel Ferguson aka JOYFUL is a singer-songwriter hailing from Aberdeen, Scotland. New track ‘Falling Asleep’ marks the first release following Ferguson’s decision to persue music full-time. The track highlights his powerful and distinctive voice, while showcasing his lyrically raw style. ‘Falling Asleep’ touches on his on-going war with mental health problems, especially depression. However, through the pain and struggle we hear in ‘Falling Asleep’, it retains a sense of strength and optimism.
