Profile: GEORGI
Although proud to be born and raised in Stoke-on-Trent, GEORGI’s ambitions far exceed her humble beginnings. While her sound encapsulates a number of influences, her clear focus is on creating pop music that connects with people. With two single releases so far – ‘Speak My Mind’ and ‘Carpool’ – GEORGI exudes a confidence that few newcomers can come close to. Her electronic indie pop sound and poetical lyrics manage to combine universal relatability with sonic intrigue, resulting in a pop soundscape of her very own – one that draws you in with vivid and evocative imagery. While many artists can take years to develop their sound, GEORGI’s down-to-earth songwriting and hypnotic vocals have put her on the path to something really special.
Speaking to Only A Northern One about the new track ‘Carpool’, GEORGI said, “I wanted to juxtapose really atmospheric production with lyrics that celebrate the mundane but incredible moments we share with friends. I really miss those little odd moments you never think you’re going to miss. A lot of my music comes from being in quite a dark place and trying to turn it into something positive. In fact, that is always the starting point for my songwriting process, I want to manifest and transform the painful bits of life into these sonic celebrations. That was definitely the case with this track, it’s a love letter to the little things and the small moments that make life worth living.”
Her process and sound is also inspired by the genre-bending pop artists of the last decade, with artists Ariana Grande, Dua Lipa and Anne-Marie encouraging GEORGI to experiment and push her sound to the limit. Discussing Grande and Anne-Marie in particular, GEORGI highlights how “their lyrics are genius and just so perfect - the way they use their vocals to really enhance the songwriting is so unique and beautiful, they manage to capture so much of themselves in their songs”. The new single ‘Carpool’ really exemplifies this, with the nocturnal, electronic production really allowing her vocals to shine and adding a new dimension to the relatable lyrics.
While the soundscape GEORGI inhabits is certainly unique, it is her songwriting and poetical lyrics that really set her apart from other new and upcoming artists. The songwriting process is clearly something special to GEORGI, “that first spark and first idea is always key, every single time. It sets the tone for the rest of the track, and from there the chorus, the verses, everything grows and takes shape. The story and the idea is always the heart of it though.”
