EP Review: Beta Waves - EP1

Despite only forming eighteen months ago, Beta Waves have already given us an impressive number of psychedelic summer anthems that are starting to generate a real buzz - and their sophomore release EP1 is testament to their potential.

The duo - Dale Easson and Harry Crossan - originally came together as part of a quartet, until the group split in half as the two chose to focus on a more electronic sound. Speaking to Only A Northern One, the duo told us last year that they “started experimenting with electronic drums and synths which totally changed the dynamic and was far more exciting”.

EP1 is electrifying, with catchy melodies seeming to just flow effortlessly. The second track in particular, ‘Come On Over’, is a highlight - and could take pride of place in any summer playlist. The mix of Easson’s soothing vocals with the incredibly catchy synth and drum work of Crossan creates an incredibly unique sound that illustrates how two have the potential to go a long way.

The record is a love letter to 90’s dance and synth-pop, and with it being just under nineteen minutes in length – it is infectiously succinct and doesn’t overstay its welcome. EP1 cracks the door open to the potential of Beta Waves, and we are excited to hear more from the group going forward.
