Single Review: Garrow Hill - Heartache for the Heartless

Garrow Hill’s ‘Heartache for the Heartless’ dropped last month and is a favour for fans of grunge and alternative rock from the early 1990s. There is plenty of guitar music that gives us similar vibes; however ‘Heartache for the Heartless’ reminds us distinctly of Alice in Chains, as Garrow Hill’s lead singer’s booming voice and the songs’ darker themes call back to a moodier time in alternative rock.

Many tracks like this have a discussion on the meaning of life, the line “There’s no place in Heaven for those who kill”, is one of the many existential views trying to find purpose in life, also comments on society bringing you down with the line “Bitter pills I’ve had to chew”, this is very much the Grunge mentality, a middle finger to the elite.

Many rock fans have been waiting for this style of music to return as a reaction against the pop-centric musical landscape we now live in. While it’s impossible to say whether Garrow Hill are heralding a return of this kind of music, with lyrics like “You can’t show me but I can show you” and “For all the risks it seems so small”, they certainly won’t be damaging their chances.

An interesting throwback to a moodier time, delivered with passion and a modern twist.
