Single Review: The Garnetts - Something Between Us

Liverpool quartet The Garnetts touch on the frustrating situation of being lead on in their new funk, folk and rock single ‘Something Between Us’. The new material from four-piece breathes fresh air in a stagnating rock music scene as it also straddles the genres of country, rock, and pop creating a whole new genre for people to enjoy.

Speaking about the track, frontman Ben Jones said: “It’s about a frustrating tension between a lonely person and someone who is leading them on, miles out of their league essentially, and it is slowly driving them to ruin. In their warped mind, something keeps them hanging on despite no actual avail, hence the troubled collisions in the chorus. It’s the heartbreak we’ve seen people go through from a distance - a truly one sided affair.”

Despite having only three songs to their name, the foursome has a penchant for moving melodies and engaging lyricism that instantly make you feel good. The signature funk meets rock style seems to have evolved with each single released as Jones added: “It’s definitely one of our most developed songs in terms of the amount of time we spent constructing each section.”

With a snappy old school Motown drumbeat and a funky, flowing bassline taking the spotlight, ‘Something Between Us’ plunges you into a kaleidoscopic swirl of sound. The genre-blending keeps you guessing and the intimate lyricism seems to speak to many, making it a song that is soul-stirring and relatable.

With similarities to The Steve Miller Band, The Garnetts are influenced by the intensity of 70s and 80s rock yet also bring through twinges of The Goo Goo Dolls. It is this injection of combined inspiration through their infectious riffs and the distinct country vocal gruffness that makes the track engaging for audiences.

The band are already making waves globally with their upbeat, catchy tracks, having performed at notable venues like Liverpool’s O2 Academy and Studio2, and have gained coverage from A&R Factory, BBC Introducing and other various UK radio stations. Let’s hope that they continue with their well-received repertoire as they release more tracks in the future.
